Ideal Settings For Your First Cup Of Coffee On The Weekend
When one wakes up on a Saturday morning, the possibilities seem endless for the day. It feels doubly special if you wake up without a hangover because you opted for a lowkey night in without any drinking. I’m a huge fan of staying in on Friday night and then hitting the ground running late Saturday afternoon on a patio, but before I do anything I like to grab a coffee.
My favorite thing to do first thing on Saturday is brew up a huge pot and just sit with my thoughts for a few minutes, preferably while “Daylight” by Bobby Womack plays at a reasonable volume.
In a perfect world, an article detailing “ideal settings for your first cup of coffee” would include sitting at a villa in Tuscany sipping espresso or lounging on a balcony in Paris with a French model slugging Cafe Bustelo, but I’m trying to keep it realistic with you right now.
While Paris and Tuscany are fantastic, first rate places to grab a cup of coffee, it’s tough to beat a cup of joe in or around the place that you officially call home. Here are my top three places to sit and drink your first cup on a routine Saturday morning. Just enjoy it, baby. It’s the weekend.
I don’t care if we’re talking backporch with some wicker furniture, on your front stoop sitting criss cross apple sauce, or on a balcony in your highrise - I’m qualifying all of those as a porch. I love to sit outside with a cup and just listen to the cicadas buzz. Sometimes I’ll opt for the front porch where I can people-watch as tryhards walk past me from a Saturday morning gym session (give it a rest you’re making everyone else feel bad about themselves) or couples go by on their way to a boozy brunch that they probably don’t want to attend.
Here’s the view from my back porch - beautiful isn’t it?
With college football just one month away from beginning, I expect that the couch is going to be a very popular choice to get that first cup down your gullet.
Nothing says Saturday morning quite like that jackass Desmond Howard droning on about how this is finally the year that Michigan gets over the hump and finishes higher than fourth in the Big Ten East division (hint: it’s not). But let’s say you’re not into college football and you’re just hungover from Friday night. There’s no shame in getting your eight ounces of Folgers and plopping down on the couch. Sink back, light a candle, throw “Mandolin Rain” by Bruce Hornsby on, and forget about life for a little bit.
Only acceptable if it’s raining outside. I adore a rainy Saturday morning. It’s an excuse to stay in sweatpants and order takeout all day, and there are no laws against drinking and eating in bed, so go upstairs, put a pot on and then crawl right back into bed with your cup firmly set in the middle of your nightstand. Fire up a new season of television on Netflix and refuse to move for anything other than a refill on coffee or to retrieve food from the delivery man at your front door.
Dining Room Table
You’re an old soul. A man or woman who does things the right way the first time around. You probably get the paper delivered to your house everyday and credit to you - that’s incredible that you can afford to do that. Or maybe you just ran out and grabbed one from a nearby kiosk. Either way, Saturday and Sunday are the two days of the week you can actually sit down and read every section of the paper without feeling like you need to get out the door to work. Get your coffee, grab a seat at the dining room table without your phone and just read. Personally this is my favorite place to get my first cup in. So relaxing.
