If You DM Me A Video Of Any Length There's A 75% Chance I'm Never Going To Watch It
Listen I love memes just as much as the next guy. I’d go so far as to say I enjoy memes a little TOO much. I recreate memes verbally with my friends while out at the bar. I spend an obnoxious amount of time every day in a group chat on Instagram called “The Memosphere.”
There are six of us and we just send memes to one another all day, every day - rain, sleet, or snow. I’ll also look at memes on Twitter. I have group chats on that app as well where all we do is send each other funny memes and tweets that we come across. But over time memes have evolved. They aren’t just pictures with a top text and a bottom text. They are interactive, and often you’ll see a thirty second video get turned into a meme, with text overlaying whatever is happening.
Both apps are different, and I think Twitter memes usually get co-opted by Instagram, but when one of my group chats sends me a video there’s a very high chance that I’m never going to watch it. I’m at work a lot right now.
I can’t just turn the volume up on my phone while in the cube to watch some video with no idea what I’m about to watch. And even when I’m off work, is it really worth diverting my attention from whatever I’m watching on Netflix to turn the sound on on my phone? I appreciate the effort. I really do. The effort involved in watching a video that a friend has sent me simply isn’t worth it.
Do you know what may be the worst part about all of this? I send videos to my meme groups all of the time! If I send you the video I expect you to watch it. If that sounds selfish and oxymoronic that’s because it is. It does not go both ways, though. I simply don’t have the time to be watching videos with the sound on.
And a lot of you are probably saying “John - why dont you just connect your airpods to your iphone so that you can watch and listen to these videos while at work?” The answer is that I’m already hooked up to my Macbook (not a big deal). I’m not going to disconnect from my computer and then reconnect to my phone just to watch a 30 second clip. That’s outlandish.
People seem to be moving away from memes and towards videos where it requires the person watching to turn the sound on. Who has the time for that? I’m annoyed just thinking that people assume I care enough to watch some shitty thirty second video they send me. If you’re sending me a meme, it better be a picture with text.
